So you’ve decided to get a dental implant. Or perhaps you need several implants. Congratulations! Losing teeth can make you feel shameful and embarrassed, but dental implants look and feel like natural teeth-and they work just as well, sometimes even better.
Dental implants are my specialty. The transformation of my patients gives me great satisfaction. And it’s not just their smiles that transform-it’s their confidence and self-esteem. Everyone deserves to smile big and mean it. Read on to learn more about the dental implant process
Once your damaged tooth has been removed, the jaw bone at that site may begin to deteriorate. The longer you wait to get the implant, the more that bone will deteriorate and lose its strength. That’s why it’s best to get your dental implant sooner rather than later.
This happens all the time, so don’t worry-it’s never too late to get the implant that you need. Bone grafting is a common procedure, and the benefits are a strong sturdy surface in which to place your implant.
Bone grafting is a fairly simple procedure. People may find the idea a little strange at first, but it’s a natural way to stabilize the bone in order to create a stable site for the implant to sit.
First I make a small incision where the grafting is to take place, using a local anesthetic. Then I place the grafting material next to your natural bone, as well as a protective coating to stabilize the area. Lastly I suture the area. Most patients take 3-6 months to heal, and this will be monitored carefully to ensure all is going as it should. Once the healing is complete you’ll be ready for the implant.
Single Tooth Implants
If you’re replacing a single tooth the process is fairly simple. In many cases I can do same day implants. For those with severe anxiety about the procedure, I specialize in sedation dentistry. This ensures that the process will be as relaxing and stress free as possible. I’ve even had patients compare my office to a spa!
We will insert a post into your reinforced jaw bone (assuming you’ve had bone grafting), and then attach the tooth. It’s that simple. Dental implants are simpler than a bridge in some ways because it’s permanent, and it only involves fixing that blank space. If you opt for a bridge, you’re turning a single tooth issue into a three teeth issue.
Dental implants look, feel, and perform like your natural teeth. They rarely fail- they have a 99% success rate. If you’re just missing one tooth, a dental implant is a simple solution that will last you a lifetime.
